Hearing Services
- Audiometric Testing
JHBI
offers routine hearing tests for both adults and children with
hearing problems. Special equipment is available to test the
electrical function of the ear (electrocochleography) as well as the
function of the hearing nerve and brain (auditory brainstem response
testing).
- Amplification/Hearing Aids
JHBI is pleased to offer a wide selection of styles and types
of hearing aids from different manufacturers to help individuals
with hearing loss. The different manufacturers include Siemens,
Resound, Unitron, Phonak, Sonic Inovations (Natura) and Widex. We
dispense varied digitally programmable and 100% digital hearing aids
whose controls allow the aids to be set more precisely for the
individual's specific hearing loss. Cosmetically appealing hearing
aids, such as the completely in-the-canal type are also available.
In addition, we offer a wide range of assistive listening devices
for the telephone, television and other listening situations.
- Cochlear Implants
Adult
and pediatric cochlear implant services are offered for patients
unable to benefit from hearing aids. The children's cochlear implant
program is in cooperation with The Nemours Children's Clinic and
Wolfson Children's Hospital. We currently offer all three major
cochlear implants - Nucleus 24, Advanced Bionics, and Med-El.
BALANCE
SERVICES
- Infrared Video
Electronystagmography (IR-ENG)
Using a special camera
which works without light, IR-ENG allows the physician to directly
observe and measure eye movements which occur in response to
stimulation. This allows a more accurate and thorough assessment of
inner ear function.
- Vestibular Autorotation Testing
This test compares eye movement with head movement in both a
horizontal and vertical direction, allowing greater sensitivity at
detecting inner ear disorders.
- Computerized Dynamic Posturography
This test guides the physician in determining the severity of a
balance disorder. The interaction of the inner ear, vision and the
feel of the ground under the feet can be assessed in order to
determine which patients are good candidates for rehabilitation.
Surgical
Neurotology
- Surgical Neurotology
Certain
types of hearing loss may be corrected or improved through surgery.
In addition, some patients with vertigo may benefit from surgery.
JHBI offers the latest in medical and surgical treatment for hearing
and balance disorders. In cooperation with neurosurgeons,
neurotologists like Dr. Green can surgically remove certain tumors
involving the ear and skull base which previously could not be
removed.
